HYSTERA (2023)

The term 'Hysteria' derived from the word 'Hystera'. 'Hystera' translates from Greek to 'womb' or ‘uterus'. Hysteria became associated with Hippocrates’ theory of 'The Wandering Womb'. This claimed the uterus as a living creature that would, when unsatisfied, detach itself from its rightful place and roam the female body. Drawing from this history, HYSTERA is a multi-faceted project that intimately reflects the artists own experience of living with endometriosis and challenges of receiving such a diagnosis. Through a blend of photography, video, written and spoken word, this project sheds light on the physical and emotional impact of an under-diagnosed and misunderstood condition, inviting viewers into a raw and deeply intimate landscape of female vulnerability, suffering and resilience.
